Ingredients

  • 60 ml Gin
  • 22.5 ml Freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 22.5 ml Sugar syrup (1:1)
  • 10 Italian basil leaves (plus a sprig for garnish)

Garnish: Fresh basil sprig or basil bouquet

The Gin Basil Smash is a modern classic that showcases just how beautifully gin can pair with fresh herbs. Bright, green, and intensely aromatic, this cocktail takes the structure of a classic sour and infuses it with the peppery, anise-tinged character of fresh basil.

Created in the mid-2000s, this drink quickly became a bar favorite thanks to its striking color, refreshing profile, and simple ingredient list. Citrus, sugar, and botanicals all come together to create a cocktail that feels both approachable and sophisticated.

Whether you are a gin lover looking for a new go-to drink or a cocktail enthusiast exploring modern classics, the Gin Basil Smash delivers a clean, zesty, and herbaceous experience that works just as well in summer as it does as an aperitif any time of year.

Instructions

Official Recipe:

  1. Prepare your tools by chilling a cocktail glass with ice or by placing it in the freezer.
  2. Add the basil leaves to a shaker tin.
  3. Muddle the basil gently without tearing it to release the essential oils and aroma.
  4. Pour in the gin, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and sugar syrup over the basil.
  5. Add plenty of ice cubes to the shaker.
  6. Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the shaker is well chilled and the drink is properly aerated.
  7. Discard the ice from the chilled cocktail glass if you used it for chilling.
  8. Double strain the mixture into the chilled cocktail glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine strainer to remove basil bits.
  9. Garnish with a fresh basil sprig or small basil bouquet, lightly slapped between your hands to release aroma.

Note: The IBA recipe does not specify a garnish, but a basil sprig is now widely accepted and greatly enhances the nose of the drink.

Tips

  • Use a dry, juniper-forward gin: Classic London Dry gins work best, as their clean profile lets the basil shine without becoming overly sweet or perfumed.
  • Always use fresh basil: Wilted or oxidized leaves will give a dull, bitter flavor. Choose bright green leaves and avoid bruising them too aggressively.
  • Control your muddling: Gently muddle to express the oils; over-muddling tears the leaves and can extract unwanted bitterness and vegetal notes.
  • Balance the sweetness: Start with the standard 22.5 ml sugar syrup, then shake and taste; you can adjust future rounds slightly sweeter or drier depending on your lemons and personal preference.
  • Shake hard and cold: A firm, fast shake not only chills the drink but also helps integrate the basil flavors and create a light, silky texture.
  • Consider double straining mandatory: Fine straining keeps the cocktail visually clean and improves mouthfeel by removing basil fragments and ice shards.
  • Serve immediately: Herbal cocktails fade quickly; serve the Gin Basil Smash as soon as it is strained for maximum aroma and freshness.

Classic Variations

  • Gin Basil Highball: Build the shaken base over fresh ice in a Highball Glass and top with soda water for a longer, more refreshing serve.
  • Basil Gin Sour: Serve the same recipe over ice in a Rocks Glass, optionally adding a dash of egg white for a frothier, softer texture.
  • Basil Smash with Vodka: Substitute gin with vodka for a cleaner, less botanical version where basil and lemon are more dominant.
  • Berry Basil Smash: Add a few fresh raspberries or strawberries in the shaker and muddle with the basil for a fruity twist.
  • Mediterranean Basil Smash: Add a small pinch of sea salt and a drop of extra-virgin olive oil on top for a savory, culinary-style variation.

Flavor Profile

On the initial taste, a burst of fresh basil aroma leads the way, wrapped in bright, zesty lemon. The sweetness of the sugar syrup quickly balances the acidity.

On the mid-palate, the botanicals of the gin integrate with the herbal notes, giving a layered profile of juniper, citrus peel, and peppery green basil.

On the finish, the drink stays dry and refreshing, with lingering herbal notes and a subtle citrus tang that invites another sip rather than overwhelming the palate.

History

The Gin Basil Smash was created in 2008 by German bartender Jörg Meyer at Le Lion • Bar de Paris in Hamburg. Inspired by the classic Whiskey Smash, Meyer adapted the template to showcase gin and fresh basil, a combination that was relatively uncommon at the time.

The original version, sometimes simply called the Basil Smash, gained rapid recognition across Europe and beyond, helped by the cocktail bar renaissance of the 2000s and the growing popularity of fresh, herb-driven drinks. Its vivid green color and straightforward recipe made it a favorite among both professionals and home enthusiasts.

The Gin Basil Smash is now recognized as a contemporary classic and is listed in the IBA (International Bartenders Association) official cocktail list in the New Era Drinks category. Its success has inspired countless herbal smashes using mint, rosemary, sage, and other fresh ingredients, securing its place as a benchmark for modern, garden-fresh gin cocktails.

Cheers!
